Calabria is a region that can be experienced, discovered and admired in a variety of ways, and cycling is certainly one of them.

Discovering Magna Graecia by bicycle: the cycle path

The Ciclovia dei Parchi della Calabria (Calabria Parks Cycle Route) is undoubtedly the best known of the several routes suitable for riding a bicycle. This trail runs through the region’s four major natural parks, namely the National Parks of Aspromonte, Sila, Pollino and the Regional Park of Serre.

It is a 540-kilometre-long ride that touches part of the Apennines and the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Sea coasts, across pristine landscapes and centuries-old forests, where one can discover Calabria’s green heart.

From the Apennines to the coast

You can ride the whole Ciclovia dei Parchi della Calabria from Reggio Calabria to Laino Borgo or the other way round. All cycle-paths are signposted and well maintained. By exploring this area on a bicycle you will not only enjoy breathtaking views, but also have the opportunity to visit museums on the history of Italy, as well as visit quite unique sites. Along the whole itinerary, you will enjoy nature, culture, history, as well as good food and wine.  For a more leisurely cycling, the Ciclovia can be split up into several sections to cover shorter distances each time.

How to best enjoy the experience of the Ciclovia

Bikeitalia provides a real guide to follow the cycle route without missing anything in this unforgettable route. A more environmental-friendly and practical ebook format of the guide is also available.

Before setting off, the most important thing is to decide how you want to complete it. Many choose bikepacking: carrying with them only minimal luggage in small bags, as if you were packing for a walking trip. As commented by many riders on this cycle trail, they did not feel like tourists but rather as members of a big family, meeting friendly and hospitable people everywhere, while enjoying a wide variety of beautiful landscapes.
